Alternates between third person and first person/omniscient narrator.
The use of this combination gives us a greater insight into the minds of the two main characters (especially that of the man). This insight allows us to empathise with the characters and to understand their motives to a greater degree, getting us more involved with the story.
The alternation between the two methods causes us to become detached from the story line, and then occasionally sucked back in by the first person, with occasional glimpses and reminders of the fact that the characters have feelings and emotions and are affected by the events.
Children of Men
Omniscient narrator/third person
The story is told through the eyes of the camera. Although we cannot see or hear what the characters are thinking, the camera may hint at this by focusing in on different objects and occurrences. The camera shakes with explosions etc, causing us to feel more a part of the story.
Never Let Me Go
First person narrator: we are told directly what the events were and how they made the protagonist feel.
The fact that the narration is in an almost conversational tone at times allows us to empathise with the character more, and so be more affected by the events of the text.
