Report on bullying in the Abbey Vocational School
Objectives
1. To determine the current levels of bullying in the Abbey Vocational School.
2. To identify the possible causes of this bullying.
3. To identify the effects of this bullying on the students, school and community.
4. To make recommendations based on the findings included in this report.
5. To determine why cases haven’t been reported to staff members.
Methodologies
· Use of a survey presented to students in the Abbey Vocational School.
· Questionnaire presented to staff members.
· Questionnaire presented to parents of students attending the school.
· Inspection of security tapes captured by cameras around the school.
· Review of incidents reported to staff members.
Findings
1. 30% of students claimed to have witnessed no bullying during their time at the school.
2. 10% reported isolated incidents of abuse, verbal and physical.
3. 15% reported repeated incidents of physical bullying.
4. 20% reported repeated incidents of verbal bullying.
5. 30% indicated that their quality of life has been compromised by bullying.
6. 3% of parents stated that their child had informed them of bullying.
7. 60% of students reported abusive messages received online or through texts.
Conclusions
· There is a relatively high amount of bullying in the Abbey Vocational School.
· The vast majority of students who experience bullying do not report it.
· Some students in the school have become isolated or excluded as a result of past experiences of bullying.
· Many students feel that the school has an unfriendly atmosphere; some students feel that this is a direct result of bullying.
· Students often choose not to report incidents of bullying for fear that it could make things worse.
Recommendations
· An action group consisting of students and staff members should be set up to discuss and attempt to resolve the issue.
· Students are encouraged to talk to other students seen on their own to try and resolve the problem of exclusion.
· A larger number of teachers are to be put on supervision around the school at break and lunch time.
